Zion National Park Tour
Travel one hour to the Zion Lodge Visitor Center and enjoy the beauties of Utah’s oldest national park. The park is known for its incredible canyons which attract canyoneers from around the world.
- Departure times for each group below
- Carpooling available or drive on your own
You have three options on how you’d like to enjoy the park:
- Mild – Zion Park Self-guided tour – a leisurely park experience.
9:00-am meeting time at the Dixie Center. Drive the 45 miles from St. George, through Hurricane and La Verkin to Springdale. There is a $25 per vehicle entrance fee. Park at the Visitor Center and take the shuttle to the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive which goes up the North Fork of the Virgin River.
- Take the shuttle to the Temple of Sinawava stop which is the final stop at the end of the road. Walk the Riverside Walk trail – a leisurely, 2-mile, round-trip, paved trail following the Virgin River.
- From the Temple of Sinawava, take the return shuttle to Weeping Rock. A short, ½-mile hike leads to a hanging garden – a must-see.
- From Weeping Rock, take the shuttle to Zion Lodge stop. Hike the Emerald Pool trail. There are three pools each higher and farther up the trail (.6, 1.0, 1.5 miles). A beautiful hike.
- Strenuous – Angel’s Landing.
9:00-am meeting time at the Dixie Center. Brian Haslam will be leading a group to the top of Angel’s Landing. This is the signature hike of Zion National Park. The trail begins at the Grotto stop and is a strenuous 4-hour, 1500-foot vertical gain, 5-mile round-trip hike. This hike requires that you be in good physical condition. The first 2 miles of the hike gains 1200 feet in elevation hiking first along the Virgin River, then up switchbacks into Refrigerator Canyon and finally up Walters Wiggles (more switchbacks). At the top of Walters Wiggles is the saddle that leads to Angel’s Landing. Probably 50% of the hikers choose to stop at this point. There is a viewpoint with a sheer 1200-foot vertical drop-off that will thrill anyone. The final ½ mile resembles more of a rock scramble. This section of the trail is quite exposed with drop-offs on all sides and is not for the faint-of-heart, so much so that there are chains for holding on. This is not a place for small children or horseplay.
- Advanced GONZO! – Observation Point Hike.
7:00-am meeting at Dixie Center. John Jarnagin and Ryan Harris will be leading a group of gonzo hikers! The trail begins at Weeping Rock shuttle stop. High on the east rim, the trail ends on a slender peninsula overhanging the valley floor offering spectacular views on three sides. This is an extremely strenuous, 5- hour, 2900-foot vertical gain, 8-mile round-trip hike. This hike requires that you be in very good physical condition. The trail leads to an overlook with drop-offs on three sides and wonderful views of the entire canyon. Warning! Steep cliffs! Not for anyone fearful of heights.
Water faucets and drinking fountains are available at the Visitor Center, the Temple of Sinawava, the Grotto, and Zion Lodge stops. However, you will need to bring water bottles for any hike. For extended hikes, it is recommended that you carry at least 3 water bottles per person and more if the daytime temperature is above 80 degrees. Bring some snacks, too.
There are other activities available if you’d like to book your own. More information about Zion National Park can be found at www.zionnationalpark.com/parkinfo.html
